Help! I can't decide what to watch

Readers of this blog will know by now that I'm (slowly) working my way through the 1000 Greatest Films, as compiled by this bunch of eclectic film enthusiasts.

The problem I'm facing is not in the watching, it's a joy from beginning to end, but in the choosing; I'm literally spoilt for choice. So I've concocted a poll in the hope my fellow blog brothers could take the pain of selection out of my hands.

I've got 5 films ready to go and would like your help in selecting which one to watch next. The films in question (click film titles for teasers) are:

Sansho the Bailiff (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1954)

Nashville (Robert Altman, 1975)

Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders, 1983)

Live Flesh (Pedro Almodovar, 1997)

Pickpocket (Robert Bresson, 1959)

Thanks in advance. No matter what film you choose it will still be something of a treat.

I chose Paris, Texas just because I think it's more essential than the rest of the films you have provided.

Out of curiosity, how many out of 1000 have you seen so far?

I haven't seen any of those, but you can't go wrong with Wim Wenders or Robert Altman.

Personally, I'd watch Paris, Texas because the last Altman film I saw was M*A*S*H, which IMNSHO, sucked. :-)

I did love A Prairie Home Companion, though. Beautiful.

I have to confess I have yet to watch any of these films. As I am inclined to shorter films (I still think 90 minutes is enough to tell a good story), I would personally start with Robert Bresson's "Pickpocket." In addition, it apparently is the kind of film that lends itself to a variety of interpretations, and that to me is always a good thing. Happy viewing!

"Paris, Texas". Even though Wenders often gets that good old fashioned 'americana road trip' movie wrong, he does the wide open landscaps of Texas (and the claustrophobic wasteland of Houston!) pretty nicely in this one. One of my favs from Wenders.

I only saw 3 movies of the 5 you mention: Nashville, Paris, Texas and Live Flesh. Thus, I vote for Nashville.

Me too.

I also vote "Nashville," primarily because it's one of my very favorite movies of all time, and I love Robert Altman.

watch them in chronological order. makes it real easy. so on your list of 5, that would be Sansho the Bailiff. :)

i have seen 3 of these and think Sansho The Bailiff the best but I dont think that many people appear to have seen it. SJ

I haven't seen Live Flesh, but the others are great films. I'd choose Sansho the Bailiff first because it was the most surprising film for me. Altman and Wenders deliver good films, but not their best. Pickpocket is great, but not everyone's cuppa.

Thanks everyone! The help is really appreciated.

In the end, 'Paris, Texas' won out despite a heavy presence from Nashville, so that's my Friday night movie sorted. Thanks!

So cheers to everyone that voted, Joseph, Joseph C, Roy, Joseph B, Marin, Bla, Pat,Julya, Marilyn and Mr. Anonymous.

Also to Anil, in answering your question I've only seen a paltry 192 on the list, so a long, but enjoyable, journey left to go.
